Glad and proud to have won an honorarium from the Burning Man Arts org, to help fund the creation of my newest work, Future Sketch!
It’s your future, you can sketch it any way you like.
With this giant sketching device, up to 4 of you and your fellow humans will be able to create anything you like that can fit within its pixels. With all the joys and frustrations of the legendary childhood toy, built large for you and the present future.
The piece itself is a large version of a classic Etch A Sketch, which uses an LED pattern instead of a physical drawing medium. Below and to either side of the LED screen area are knobs.
Much like the venerable children’s toy “Etch-a-Sketch”, you draw by turning the knobs. Two knobs directly below the screen enable 1 person to make art on it. The other knobs at either side of the screen enable up to 4 people to make art at the same time.
They can also clear the current art and start it over at any time by vigorously shaking two of the knobs.
Why?
Because among many other things, art is great and fun as play. It can be a great experience to get to approach it in a low-stakes and limited environment. Collaborative drawing can be it’s own unique brand of fun as well.
